Soprano Nancy Hendrick: Her Story
In early 2025, Soprano Nancy Hendrick wowed the packed audience at the Baton Rouge River Center Concert Hall in her rendition of “How Great Thou Art” for the inauguration ceremony of the new major-president of Baton Rouge. The video of that solo, included above, has now been seen by over 1,000 people on social media such as Facebook, and has resulted in an incredible response.
Nancy has delighted parishoners with her beautiful voice as cantor at St. Agnes Catholic Church in downtown Baton Rouge for over 25 years. She also serves as occasional cantor at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, also in Baton Rouge. Previously, she served as cantor in New York City at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
Awards and Opera Performances
Nancy Hendrick is a two-time 1st Place winner in the NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) Gulf States Region Vocal Competition, and a Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Competition. With Baton Rouge Opera, she performed as Laetitia in Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief, and as Charlotte in Offenbach’s The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein. In New York City, Nancy Hendrick performed Despina in Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte, Susanna in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Oscar in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, and Musetta in Puccini’s La bohème.
Teaching
While a student of Manhattan School of Music in New York City, Nancy Hendrick’s love of teaching led her to open her own private voice studio where she taught for several years. Nancy Hendrick moved her studio to Baton Rouge where has taught many private students for over 25 years.
Since 2021, Nancy serves as the music teacher for the MDO (Mothers’ Day Out) program at Jefferson Baptist Church, teaching eight classes of toddlers! From 2021 to 2024, Nancy served as the music instructor to high schoolers at Sequitur Classical Academy. On the faculty of the formerThe Music Tree until its close in 2020 due to Covid, Nancy is also a certified Kindermusik instructor, teaching Kindermusik to toddlers at Grace Episcopal in St. Francisville until its close due to Covid. Nancy also taught music with the East Baton Rouge School System at Wedgewood Elementary.
Education and Training
Nancy Hendrick earned the Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Manhattan School of Music in 1996. She has studied acting at the Lee Strassberg Institute in New York City. Nancy studied voice with Mignon Dunn, Shirlee Emmons, and Leyna Gabriele.
